the death of discovery.

We are the generation that demands satisfaction. We are the generation that cannot wait. We want the future and we want it in the present. We want service and we wanted it yesterday. We want you, information, and we wanted you before anyone else. We also wanted to tell everyone else before they knew.

I think that pretty much sums up how the joy of discovery works now. Have you heard? Search engines are changing the way we think. Our babies and their babies’ babies will be born with built-in WiFi. (or whatever standard they have then)

Then: when there was something we didn’t know, (and we didn’t have an encyclopedia set in the house) we would just sit there and wonder and not-know. Things like, did the Ultimate Warrior really lose his arms in an accident? (P.S. he didn’t.)

We would go about our smooth, shot-in-film-stock past lives in utter ignorance. That is, of course, until you hear from a friend who heard from a friend-of-a-friend that no, the Ultimate Warrior did not lose his arms in that one accident trying to carry Yokozuna with Lex Luger sitting on top. And then there was joy! We learned something new! Bliss.

Now: you come across something you don’t know, you google it. Fast, efficient and straightforward.

The sad thing is, I don’t know which is better. (and my adult working life has revolved around search engines)

P.S. I don’t know if the image above is related or not, but I did a search on “brain.”
