I first saw System Shock 2 as a feature about Ken Levine in the pages of Computer Gaming World. It was 1999: Fallout 2 was just about a year old, Warcraft III was almost a different game, and gamers were just about to enter the cyberpunk starship, Von Braun.
I have wanted to play this game even before I had the machine that could. Ridiculous.
After getting a copy in 2006, feeling quite confident that I could run it, I faced a horrible realization: the game wasn’t compatible with the future. I didn’t get anywhere beyond the menu.
I have not touched it until the other night, and was surprised that modern/modder tools have made it ridiculously easy to install and play. In less than 10 minutes, copying the SHOCK folder to somewhere in the harddisk, having SS2Tool fix it up and voila — I was playing System Shock 2, in modern, widescreen resolution. It was mod-ready too!
After reading the technical FAQ in the systemshock forums, I installed the mods SHTUP, ADaoB, Rebirth and some weapon mods. Texture updates, bug fixes and model updates make the game feels like it belongs in the 2000s.
I am at hour 3 now of playing. I’m trying to reroute the toxic leak so that I can get access to the engine core; psychic monkeys, maintenance droids, protocol droids and infested crew members along the way, and my wrench is bloody — I love this part.

PC Gamer recently did a System Shock 2 feature on Reinstall: System Shock 2, giving you more reason to check the game out.
