Gmail Labs.

Since I just wrote about Gmail video and chat, here are a couple more features that the average user might miss: Gmail Labs!

Gmail Labs are possible features (experimental!) that might enhance your Gmail experience.  Think of it as a test drive for what might become regular features in Gmail.

The list is a varied bunch; it includes useful features like a Google Calendar box, to amusing, like an old-school game of “Snake.”  (Can’t get it to work, it says hit the ‘&’ in the main page, but I get nothing.)

To turn it on:

  1. Click Settings, then go to the Labs tab.
  2. Look for the feature you want to turn on, and click on the Enable radio button.

I have the following enabled in mine: Pictures in chat, Random signature, Right-side chat, Hide unread counts, Navbar drag and drop, Mark as Read button, and the Google Calendar Gadget.

You may be using Thunderbird or that Opera Mail thing, but it’s good to know that webmail fans (or for those who check their webmail from place to place) are getting “plug-ins” for Gmail.

It’s a blast that I get to see the Google Calendar from within Gmail — there’s also the “mail goggles” feature I wrote about before.

Should a feature fail to please you, you could always send your feedback from the Labs tab.

Enjoy!
