Desktop Modding: Faux-OS X.

I’ve dabbled with desktop customization before, so whan I discovered this neat little app, I guess I’ll try my hand at recreating the OS X desktop.

A desktop mod really won’t compare to the real thing, but if there’s anything about the folks at Apple, it’s that they are gods of design.

While most tutorials online will tell you to get the bloated ObjectDock apps (and the accompanying themes) I chose Rocketdock because it doesn’t take up as much of your PC’s resources while active.

Steps:

  1. Get the ‘Space’ wallpaper from here.  Or, alternatively, you could type in ‘OS X Leopard’ in Google Image Search and select which wallpaper is more Mac-iconic for you.
  2. Download RocketDock. Only because it’s a slick piece of application-launching software.  Plus, it’s FREE!
  3. PC Apps?  Get your icons here.  RocketDock has an active fanbase, so icons for your favorite PC apps (like my Google Chrome icon in the screenie) might be available here.  They mostly come in .PNG, for better scaling and crisper edges.  You could even drag items from your Quicklaunch directly to the RocketDock.  Right-click on an icon and select Icon Settings to replace an icon.  Keep your icon images in a folder, for convenience.
  4. Set the taskbar to autohide.  Right-click on the taskbar and select Properties.  Click the ‘Auto-hide the Taskbar’ checkbox.
  5. iTunes!  iTunes for Windows already looks like a Mac app — you could use it as your MP3 player.  If you have an iPod, you already have this.
  6. Safari!  Apple released the PC version of Safari months back (I think) so that Windows users can also enjoy the neat, previously-Mac-only browser.
  7. Widgets!  Get Yahoo! Widgets to add whatever Mac desktop functionality you like.  I honestly haven’t spent enough time in front of a Mac to know what neat little apps are in the desktop.

Think I missed anything?  Feel free to leave a comment for suggestions!
