DC New 52 Books You Shouldn’t Miss

As we prepare for the “second wave” of The New 52 books, I have taken the time to get up to speed with some of them. Admittedly, when I wrote my notes on Justice League #1, I was feeling a little bit betrayed. I have now come to accept that, it is not, in fact “my universe.”

I failed to see the bigger picture. The New 52 could create possibly the greatest comic books in this generation. (If you’re a normal person like me, you only have a handful of comic books you follow anyway, so if you don’t like a book, don’t buy it. I’m hoping digital comics gives us more “try-before-you-buy” stuff to make it easier to invest in a new book.)

I have read: Justice League, Batman, Batgirl, Batman and Robin, Animal Man, Aquaman, Batwoman, Detective Comics, Catwoman, Deathstroke, Demon Knights, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Grifter, Justice League International, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Stormwatch, Superboy, Supergirl, Superman, Teen Titans and Wonder Woman. (whew)

Of the books that I am updated with, here are the 4 books you shouldn’t miss:

Batman – Remember the last year-and-half’s Detective Comics? Writer Scott Snyder is crafting something truly special with Batman on the main book. Batman is now currently facing a foe that is proving to be a far more credible threat than any new addition in the bat-rogue gallery in a while. On art duty: Greg Capullo is just killing it. His Batman is kinetic, reflecting the relative youth of the universe. Coming soon: possible horror/psychological thriller story arcs from this duo. :O

Catwoman – It’s easy to get stuck at Catwoman #1′s last panel. But if you can get over BAT-SEX, you will be rewarded with a fledgling, morally ambiguous and vulnerable Selina Kyle not seemingly able to catch a break. What makes it so compelling is that even she’s not sure where she’s going, which makes for interesting reading. Escalation would be the perfect word. Everything just builds and grows and gets better/worse for Selina. Judd Winick is making us feel sorry for a criminal. Also, Guillem March can draw the ladies. You have to check this book out.

Green Lantern – The decision to keep Hal grounded during the end of Flashpoint was a shocker. “How is he going to be part of the Corps? Will he still be GREEN?,” were a few of the questions that came to mind. There’s no doubt that Geoff Johns IS the GL-universe prime mover god. The first 5 issues are about Sinestro trying to fix his world, and a reluctant-to-help Hal just happy to be wearing the ring. Good cop, sad cop?

Batwoman – This is the most beautiful New 52 book. J.H. Williams III creates the most beautiful spreads — you could easily pick out panels from this book and frame them to your wall. They are that good. The first story arc is also a genuine mystery, with number 5 ending with an interesting proposition. (Have not read 6 yet)

Those are my favorites. How are you enjoying The New 52 so far? Any book I should check out?
