Since July: I have been wanting ice-cold dark Czech beer to hit my dry smoker’s lips.  This week: they’re doing a dry run — when I heard that, I made the trip, went the distance — only to find that the dark weizen wasn’t there.

Grappa’s is now run by a new owner — they’re no longer just a franchise here, the new owners are partners with the original, a full-blown branch.

I managed to meet/amuse the new owner because my camera and phone has tons of photos from Grappa’s pre-July 2010.  Got introduced to Chef Benjamin Leib — a fellow beer-lover — who tells me that in the coming months, they’ll be introducing newer, tastier, foreign beers, hopefully, to fill the gap.

However, if you’re looking for some great Italian food — try to drop by.  Chef Benjamin told me they’re still in the dry run phase and that prices are to be adjusted still.

What a fine drunk I am turning out to be.

If you compare it with the original ads, then you probably already know that it’s the Double Down Sandwich.  To quote something from my tumblr post about the Double Down Sandwich, “KFC please bring this sandwich to my country.”  I guess the best way to get things is to ask for them — because, a full 2-days earlier than what the profile picture said, people have been claiming the the Double Down Sandwich is already available here — in my country!

I verified this:

(Taken with my phone)  What concerned me at first is: it says “mayo” instead of “Colonel’s secret sauce,” so I didn’t know if this would taste different than the ones in the States.  Also, it’s priced at Php 100 ($2.29)!  It’s cheaper here?!  Awesomeeeeee

Anyway, I bought three (and ate two) and can only come to the conclusion that: it is quite an experience.  It’s a bit too sour for my taste with the mayo, but I’d still eat it.  A sandwich — with no buns?!  Preposterous!  But it really happened, as my stomach bears witness.  Check it out!

This is basically the opposite of a vegetarian meal.

Relish, a new posh restaurant recently opened across the street from where I used to work.  Relish is a gem located at the ground floor of Ponte Salcedo, situated in the ever-awake Valero St. in Makati City.  If you come in at a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, finding the place is easy — you could listen in for Moise, the brilliant one-man, mixed-genre musician who provides soothing “are-you-sure-it’s-not-a-CD?” tunes while people eat.

The atmosphere is conducive to comfort, which in turn is conducive to comfortable eating.  It also helps that there are a lot of greens, which is both relaxing to the eye and at the same time, my favorite color.  A glance on the menu will give you a glimpse that the food adheres to the theme of “what-you-want-in-your-tummy.”

I ordered the chimichuri chicken kebab — which combines my love for chicken, and, well, kebabs.  It was delicious.  I ran out of things to say, so here are some pictures:

Pricing is very reasonable.  My only thing with Relish would be: why wasn’t it open when I was working across the street?

This will be a second-hand account of the mysterious DERP BRGR.  The other day, Mikko showed me pictures of a burger from the recently-opened BRGR: The Burger Project.  (Which, as he reports, is just beside his office — lucky basterd.)

The Burger Project is basically: you being let loose in a real-world version of that Play Doh playset where you get to own a restaurant: YOU MAKE THE BRGR.

They provide the base for which you are let loose with your hungry creativity — you even get to name your burger!

Here’s Mikko’s DERP BRGR:

Derp Brgr = Beef Patty, Poppyseed Bun, BACON (which should be part of all burgers, by default!), Cheddar Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce, Caramelized Onions, Special Brgr Sauce

What will you put in your burger?  I’m thinking 4-7 patties and a potato bun.
