Well, since I can’t seem to write that Watchmen review yet — here’s a review of the first issue of Battle For The Cowl. If your ears aren’t near the comicbook ground, then you must know: Batman’s “dead.”

Gotham’s underground (Who never seem to learn, what, with more than a decade of vigilante justice? Really?) rejoice — but not too much. The Batman family — Robin, Nightwing, Oracle, Catwoman, Huntress, Spoiler, Damian + reinforcements still punch in for attendance.
Black Mask returns, (he died, what — 2 years ago? now he’s back? wonder when Bats will come back) performs a forced, Battle-Royal-esque ultimatum to Gotham’s resident cowardly and superstitious lot: do very, very bad things … or die.
The GCPD are shaken — there are riots everywhere, regardless of how many vigilantes are working in unison to hopefully make up for Batman’s absence. Gordon feels helpless. It also doesn’t help that the Bat-family is finding clues all ’round about a well-trained Batman impostor. (Which, I’m guessing is different from “The Third Batman”)
All in all, Battle for the Cowl is shaping up to be another mixer-upper of Gotham’s vigilantes and villains, walking down a tightrope of a mystery: who will take over the mantle? I don’t feel much for it though, because yes, I’m a Bat-purist, and they should’ve resolved this a couple weeks ago, without having to make a big deal out of it. :p
Also, a little off-putting is Damian. He’s been trained by the league of shadows and ninja manbats/menbat(?) — he lopped a guy’s head off … twice(?) In a possible future, he’ll be the one taking on the mantle of the bat: why would he piss his pants at the sight of Killer Croc?
I may complain now, but there’s no question about it: Batman’s dead (for now) and I have to know what they’ll do about it.
