Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich!

Today: big day for Google. Android’s latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich, has been formally announced, along with the first device to carry it: the Galaxy Nexus.

The new device looks SICK. It’s slightly bigger than the Samsung Galaxy S2, and sports a slick, curved body.

Here’s a short video highlighting the Galaxy Nexus, along with the new features of Ice Cream Sandwich:

Below is a demo of the face unlock feature:

A few thoughts:

  • Face Unlock – If you check your Google account dashboard, you’ll be surprised to see just how much Google already knows about you. Add Face Unlock: does that mean Google will now know what you look like? Will Face Unlock work for twins?!
  • Softkeys – When ICS eventually gets released for all devices, will the on-screen soft keys render your capacitive/hardware buttons redundant? Will they give you an option to opt for the hardware keys instead, to give you more screen real estate?
  • Panoramic Camera – Okay, so this is probably a feature of the new camera app, but I’m thinking: if the Nexus only has 5 megapixels, won’t the panoramas be in low resolution? Also, when will someone leak out this camera app?!
  • Chrome bookmark sync – I’m looking forward to this one. My bookmarks are already synced to my Google account, so it only makes sense to make it easier to open them anywhere.

Soon: the day will come when Android users will be able to claim that their phones are powered by ice cream sandwiches.

In other related news: Motorola revives the RAZR name! The new device, the DROID RAZR is intent on making us love Motorola handsets again by making them anorexic. Though the thinness implies frailty, the construction and materials would suggest otherwise. Built with KEVLAR, Gorilla Glass and apparently something of a force field to shield against water, these new RAZRs would do well in even the most rugged environments.

It’s scheduled for release on the 1st of November.
